Team Members looking to grow professionally and personally have the option to explore incredible internal opportunities like joining a Team Member Resource Group (TMRG). TMRGs allow Team Members to connect with leaders like Nicole and DeBorah (who you’ll hear from below), work toward increasing diversity and inclusion measures at HGV and gain valuable leadership skills to utilize in current and future roles.
HGV hosts TMRGs for African American, Asian-Pacific Islander, Hispanic-Latino, LGTBQIA+ and multi-cultural Team Members. There are also TMRGs for sustainability, members of the military, different age groups, women, Team Members with disabilities and working parents and caretakers. As you can see, all walks of life are welcome, so there’s surely a TMRG fit for you.
Read on to learn about Team Members Nicole H. and DeBorah W. Below, they share how they landed at HGV, their experience as two of the Women’s TMRG co-chairs and their advice for fellow and future Team Members looking to advance their careers.
Nicole: I moved to Las Vegas in 2005 from Northern California to pursue my degree in hospitality and hotel management. In 2013, I saw a posting for “Director of Front Office,” so I applied and got the job, then was promoted to Director of Operations and later to Assistant General Manager.
DeBorah: Tourism is major in Myrtle Beach. The last 12 years, I spent a great deal with Resort Operations and wanted to see a different side of the business. My passion is assisting people. HGV is top tier in the area, and I wanted to be a part of the top tier team.
Nicole: Being able to use my vacation benefits and travel with my friends and family is a huge perk. Also, I feel like HGV really fosters internal growth. I’ve had the opportunity to have great conversations with different leaders in the industry that not only have helped me grow my career but grow as a person as well. Everyone truly cares about you as an individual — it’s great to feel that from such a large corporation.
Nicole: It’s been so cool to connect with people you don’t normally connect with on your day-to-day job. I’ve gotten to connect with different people in different departments from all over the world and hear their stories and some of their struggles and concerns.
DeBorah: I’ve never been a part of something like the Women’s TMRG. I joined wanting to bring more to the South Carolina market and my Team Members. I wanted them to see that we have to jump in and be a part of the change we want to see. With groups such as TMRGs, the conversation continues, the ideas continue…that’s special to me.
Nicole: Don’t be afraid to say yes, ask your leader if you can shadow a different department for the day or accept new opportunities like joining a task force to help resorts reopen after natural disasters. Yes, you’re hundreds of miles away from home at times, but being able to go and experience different hotels — some that could really use your help — helps you grow, too.
DeBorah: Two things: 1. Stick to the plan but don’t be afraid to shuffle. 2. Remember the people on your journey, they all play a position and are part of the process.
Joining a TMRG is just one of the many wonderful ways to take your HGV career to new heights.
